Pickleball Paddle Buying Guide

Paddle types:

There are 3 types of paddles: power, control, and all-round.  The more power a paddle has, the more difficult it can be to control.

Factors that effect the power and control of a paddle:

The softer the core and softer the face of a paddle, the easier it will be to control.  This is due to the ball dwelling on the paddle face for a slightly longer period when you hit the ball.  A harder core and harder paddle face will have more "pop" which can equate to more power.

Generally, the thicker the core, the larger the sweet spot.  A larger sweet spot will give you a more consistent response across the paddle face.  This in turn will make the paddle more forgiving and the ball easier to control.

The paddle face also effects how the paddle plays/feels.  A carbon fiber face will give you the most control and is the most durable.  A graphite face is also good for control and very durable.  A fiberglass face is going to give you more power but is less durable than carbon fiber and graphite.

The longer and heavier the paddle, the more power it will have.  A heavier paddle also adds stability at moment of impact with the ball.

Other things to consider:

If you use a 2-handed backhand, you will need a handle that's at least 5" long, 5.25-6" recommended.  If you use a 1-handed backhand, you will probably benefit having a handle that's 5.25" or shorter.

Most beginners will benefit from using a paddle that is 15.5-16" long as these tend to be wider in shape creating a larger, more forgiving sweet spot.
